Retina Hong Kong

Retina Hong Kong (formerly known as "Hong Kong Retinitis Pigmentosa Society") is the first and at the moment the only organization of the kind among Chinese communities around the world. It is registered as a non-profit making organization under Chapter 32 of Companies Ordinance with the Companies Registry and is granted with tax exemption under Section 88 of Inland Revenue Ordinance by Inland Revenue Department. An audit system is also established. Retina Hong Kong has also invited a voluntary legal advisor giving advice on legal-related matters.

Vision and Mission

Retina Hong Kong's mission is to -

1. provide medical and rehabilitative services to people with inherited retinal degenerative diseases in Hong Kong;

2. gather all varieties of information concerning inherited retinal degenerative diseases from all over the world and to bring such information to the attention of patients, their family members, medical practitioners, optometrists, geneticists and scientific researchers;

3. promote public education on 'eye care' and to raise public concerns on people with inherited retinal degenerative diseases;

4. exert and encourage medical and scientific researches on cause identification, prognosis, treatment and prevention to inherited retinal degenerative diseases in Chinese communities; and

5. bridge between people with inherited retinal degenerative diseases in Hong Kong, the Mainland and other Chinese communities all over the world.

Organization

The top decision-making body of Retina Hong Kong lies with the General Meeting which has embodied a Council responsible for daily operation. There are distinctive committees reporting to the Council. They are -

Science and Medical Advisory Committee - provides medical and scientific advice to the Society which is jointly advised by some medical practitioners, optometrists, geneticists and scientific researchers.

Members Service Committee - responsible for membership management, home visit and liaise, group works and recreational activities, daily operation of the Jockey Club Visual Rehanbilitation Centre, etc.

Information and Public Relations Committee - responsible for producing and distributing information and publications, public education activities, web site management, contact with other entities, policy advocacy and right issues.

Finance Committee - responsible for fund raising, budgeting, and finance management.

Volunteers Coordination Committee - responsible for recruitment, training, organizing and development of volunteers.

Personnel Management Committee - responsible for recruitment, wage and benefit, appraisal, training of staff team.

Services

Retina Hong Kong has operated the Jockey Club Visual Rehabilitation Centre and provides the following services to people with inherited retinal degenerative diseases, their family members and other target groups in the community -

To gather all varieties of information about Retinitis Pigmentosa and other inherited retinal degenerative diseases from all over the world and to bring such information to the attention of patients, their family members, medical practitioners, optometrists, geneticists, and scientific researchers;

To answer enquiries about inherited retinal degenerative diseases and to make referrals whenever necessary;

To arrange medical and rehabilitative talks on inherited retinal degenerative diseases;

To keep close contacts with medical practitioners, optometrists, geneticists and scientific researchers in Hong Kong and all over the world and to promote and encourage researches on cause identification, prognosis, treatment and
prevention to inherited retinal degenerative diseases;

To co-ordinate, manage and promote the Hong Kong Patients Register of Retinal Degenerations which will establish a territorial register with clinical and genetics information of patients of inherited retinal degenerative diseases;

To purchase and distribute medical supplements for members and patients under the advice and guidance of medical practitioners..

To gather information about visual aids and to provide training on the use of such visual aids;

To identify and purchase suitable visual aids for members;

To provide all-round rehabilitative services to members on aspects of occupation, education, and daily living;

To arrange sharing groups for mutual understanding and encouragement of members on positively coping with the disease;

To organize recreational activities for members;

To assist individuals in striving for equal opportunities in society.

Membership

Full Member: the people who are affected by inherited retinal degenerative diseases patients, their immediate family members may apply to be a Full Member. A Full Member is a voting member and is eligible for election to the Council.

Associate Member: every other person may apply to be an Associate member. The Associate Member is not a voting member and not eligible for the election to the Council. A Associate Member may be invited as a member of the Council.

Honorary Member: The HKRPS will invite individuals as Honorary Member of the Society.

Scientific and Medical Advisory Committee

In order to accommodate scientific and medical information to our members and general public more effectively, build up the foundation to develop future research among Chinese RP patients, we set up the Scientific and Medical
Advisory Committee in June, 1995.
